ABOUT
Described as “...a Black Lucinda Williams…” and "...a brutal, original, explosive singer..." (Vanity Fair) as well as “...the unknown queen of Americana…” (Feedback), Queen Esther is a writer, vocalist, solo performer, producer, songwriter and musician. Raised in Atlanta, Georgia and rooted in Charleston, South Carolina’s culturally rich and enigmatic Lowcountry, her 2021 self-release Gild The Black Lily -- called “...a minor masterpiece…” (LIRA) -- delves into the African traditions and Black folkways that raised her and goes further, reworking well-worn cover songs to create a sound she calls Black Americana. This album is the culmination of several critical Southern elements, not the least of which are years of recording and touring internationally as frontwoman for several projects with her mentor, harmolodic guitar icon James “Blood” Ulmer, including a stint in his seminal band Odyssey. As the fourth release on her imprint EL Recordings, Gild The Black Lily continues to garner stellar reviews and airplay worldwide while her masterful TED Talk about the true origins of country and bluegrass steadily reverberates throughout the Americana community. A member of SAG/AFTRA and AEA, Queen Esther’s creative output in New York City has led to prolific collaborations in neo-vaudeville, alt-theater, various alt-rock factions, (neo) swing bands, trip-hop DJs, spoken word performances, jazz combos, jam bands, numerous blues configurations, original Off-Broadway plays and musicals, experimental music, art noise and performance art. Her performance and recording resume includes Speedball Baby, Mona’s Hot Five, Eyal Vilner Big Band, Burnt Sugar Arkestra, Richard Barone (The Bongos), Elliot Sharp (as the alt-blues duo Hoosegow), Drew Nugent and the Midnight Society, Swingadelic, LaLa Brooks (The Crystals), The New York Jazzharmonic and The Dirtbombs, amongst others. Recent highlights include 2021 - 2022 playwriting residencies with New Perspectives Theater Company and American Theater Group as well as principal work in musician/playwright Taylor Mac’s upcoming jazz opera The Hang.
