ABOUT
Gary Salamone began his early exploration of Indian Classical Music at the age of 16 listening to sitar, sarod and tabla. As his interest grew he expanded into other instruments such as sarangi, bansuri, santoor and violin. However, it was not until his introduction to vocal music in the form of khayal and dhrupad some 25 years ago that he found his true preference. He then spent several years learning tabla and the foundations of Indian rhythm and theory under David Courtney in Houston, Texas. During his tenure in Houston he had the opportunity to experience many of the great stalwarts in concert and this greatly expanded his appreciation, understanding and knowledge of khayal . He continues to enjoy khayal through live concerts, videos, online concerts, and recorded media and by direct contact with the artists themselves.
