We are beyond excited to welcome Underground System to Unicorn Bar on Saturday, August 9th!
Underground System is a shape-shifting force in New York City's dance music scene, fusing afrobeat, punk, and disco into a sound that's as unpredictable as it is infectious. Their 2018 debut LP, ‘What Are You’, earned cult status, praised for its “David Byrne meets Soulwax” energy and propelling them onto global stages. A whirlwind 2019 European tour saw them electrify crowds at festivals like Eurockéennes and Fusion, cementing their reputation for kinetic live performances. Now, with their recent EP’s and the release of their two latest singles, ‘Heads Of State’ and ‘Devotion’, they’re charging full-speed toward a sophomore album and more tour dates.
We'll also be joined by NatRahavaka (aka DJ Busquelo), who will be DJing throughout the night and afterwards! Folkloric and futuristic, his music invokes ancestral rhythms as the blueprint for excursions into international dance music culture. A longtime member of the @turntablesonthehudson crew, he has been DJing in the NYC scene for three decades. In the 90's he founded and ran the record label RhythmLove with partner @nickodemusnyc. He was a resident DJ at Bembe in Brooklyn for many years in the 00's. He hosted a salsa radio show on WKCR called The Mambo Machine. He is also the founder of a music festival called Present Present which showcases emerging artists, many of whom have been awarded or nominated for Grammys.
