We warmly invite you to the Saami Family Apprenticeship 2026 Student Showcase—an intimate evening to hear the fruits of a month of deep vocal training through group and solo performances by this year’s cohort.

The showcase shares the work of the Khayal Apprenticeship, a rare four-week intensive with The Saami Brothers, guided by their legendary father, Ustaad Naseeruddin Saami. Rooted in daily riyāz and close transmission, the apprenticeship introduces students to the fundamentals of voice culture—discovering one’s true singing voice—and to the 700+ year-old khayal tradition in its original, healing microtonal temperament. Over the month, participants refine pitch, deepen listening, and cultivate vocal sensitivity within a living lineage.

This evening is offered simply as a chance to hear from our community’s incredible vocalists, and to learn more about the Saami Family apprenticeship and khayal gāyaki traditions.

Ustaad Naseeruddin Saami, Lead Khayal Expert

Ustaad Naseeruddin Saami is one of the world’s most revered living masters of Khayal, the oldest form of classical South Asian singing, rooted in the Delhi Gharana musical tradition founded by his ancestors. His lineage traces back to Miyan Samath, a disciple of Hazrat Ameer Khusro, and his family’s musical heritage has been closely tied to the spiritual court of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya for centuries.
Trained from the age of 10 under his grand-uncle Ustaad Sardar Khan in Lahore, Ustaad Saami specializes in the ancient microtonal Khayal tradition, known for its 49-note scale and spiritual resonance. He is a strict practitioner of Sudh Bani (pure voice) style, emphasizing clarity of sur (pitch) and subtle emotional expression. His performances are renowned for their serenity, deeply meditative atmosphere, and heartfelt delivery of ragas and bandishes. In addition to Khayal, he also performs Thumri, Dadra, Tarana, and Sadra, showcasing his versatility across genres.
Ustaad Saami’s artistry offers an antidote to the hyper-produced, technology-driven sounds of today—his singing invites reflection, stillness, and deep listening, rooted in centuries of syncretic cultural exchange among Arabic, Turkic, Persian, and South Asian traditions.
Produced by Grammy Award-winner Ian Brennan, his albums—God Is Not a Terrorist (2019), Pakistan Is for the Peaceful (2020), and East Pakistan Sky (2021)—have earned widespread global acclaim, with praise from Mojo, Uncut, and Songlines. His music has been described as “mesmerizing,” “progressive,” and “spiritually electrifying.” His live performances have moved audiences worldwide, from the main stage at Peter Gabriel’s WOMAD festival to Le Guess Who? in the Netherlands, where his midnight performances brought audiences to tears.
He has been awarded Pakistan’s Tamgha-e-Imtiaz for his extraordinary contribution to music.
Since 2024, Ustaad Saami has toured extensively across the United States, presenting sold-out performances at venues such as Asia Society (NY), Flushing Town Hall, Wolf Trap National Performing Arts Center, Seattle Town Hall, and the South Asia Institute. He also led a successful month-long Khayal residency in Brooklyn, mentoring American students in the art of Khayal and microtonal singing, advancing cross-cultural musical exchange. Accompanied by his sons and ensemble, Ustaad Saami continues to pass on this rare musical tradition through performance, teaching, and recording—sharing what he calls “music as food for the soul.”

Saami Brothers Qawwal (Lead) & Khayal Expert

Muhammad Rauf Saami is an accomplished vocalist, khayal practitioner, and lead member of the Saami Brothers Qawwal, the humble custodians of the traditions of Qawwali and Khayaal of Hazrat Ameer Khusrau and Ustaad Taanrus Khan Sahab. As the eldest son and disciple of the critically acclaimed Maestro Ustaad Naseeruddin Saami, he is well-versed in several eastern classical genres, including Khayal, and currently performing in a Riwayiti (traditional) Qawwali Group.

From an early age, he was blessed to have been taught the intricacies of classical music by his maternal grandfather, the late Ustaad Mushi Raziuddin Ahmed Khan, the late Ustaad Nizamuddin Saami, and Ustaad Naseeruddin Saami.

Since 2024, Muhammad Rauf Saami has accompanied his father, Ustaad Naseeruddin Saami, and led his brothers in a series of critically acclaimed performances and educational residencies across the United States & Canada, presenting both Qawwali and Khayal as sacred, living traditions.

He has performed at prestigious venues such as Asia Society (NY), Flushing Town Hall, Wolf Trap National Performing Arts Center, Seattle Town Hall, and the South Asia Institute. In addition to ensemble work, Muhammad Rauf Saami’s solo performances have increasingly gained recognition for their depth and virtuosity, especially in Khayal, under his father’s close supervision. He also played a pivotal role in organizing and leading a month-long Khayal residency in Brooklyn, where he mentored American students in the art of Khayal and microtonal singing, demonstrating both his artistic mastery and his operational expertise in curriculum design and cross-cultural musical exchange.

Nermeen Arastu
Co-lead of Strategy & Residencies for Saami Family

An officiated student of Ustaad Rauf Saami of Pakistan’s renowned Saami Family—master exponents of both Khayal and classical Qawwali traditions—Nermeen Arastu directs the family’s broader strategic vision and work in the United States. She works closely with the Saami Family to guide their U.S.-based teaching and apprenticeship programs, now entering their second year, introducing American learners to an immersive, oral-transmission pedagogy rarely practiced outside South Asia.
Arastu helps create community-centered pathways—apprenticeships, masterclasses, and public programs—that invite diverse audiences into a 750-year-old musical lineage. Through interpretive materials and guided listening frameworks, she ensures that the Saami family’s Sufi-rooted sound practices remain accessible without sacrificing their philosophical depth, fostering multigenerational and cross-cultural communities of learning.
In addition to her cultural leadership, Arastu is a law professor at CUNY School of Law, where she co-directs the Immigrant and Non-Citizen Rights Clinic, leading community education, litigation, and advocacy initiatives that foreground dignity, narrative, and creative lawyering techniques. Across disciplines, her work centers accessibility and inclusion by placing immigrant artists’, clients’, and participants’ voices at the forefront as experts, guiding and supporting their storytelling, advocacy, and creative expression to build stronger community-led programs and deepen connection.
