Roots in Sound is a three day festival created and curated by David Virelles dedicated to showcasing the depth and diversity of modern music in New York City. The programming highlights a cross-generational exchange among musicians, embracing both seasoned
artists and emerging voices. It will feature concerts, listening sessions and discussions, fostering an immersive experience for audiences and artists alike.
Cyrille, born in Brooklyn, New York, to a Haitian family, initially studied science at St. John's University but switched to the Juilliard School to pursue jazz. He was mentored by drummers Willie Jones and Lenny McBrowne and became a disciple of Philly Joe Jones. Cyrille's professional career began with singer Nellie Lutcher and included early recordings with Coleman Hawkins. He joined Cecil Taylor's band in 1965, working together for 15 years, and later collaborated with Milford Graves. Cyrille has also recorded with notable musicians such as David Murray and Carla Bley and was a member of Trio 3 with Oliver Lake and Reggie Workman.
