Join us on Sunday, August 24th for a night of Latin, queer punk music from Chico Raro Band, with opener, Mona Freaka! We're excited to see them fill up the space with their exhilarating presence and sound.
@chico_raro_band is a Latin punk queer band based in New York. The project was launched in 2020 by Colombian trans noir artist Jei Fabiane, a lyrical singer and violinist, who began an artistic exploration merging their operatic voice with punk, electronic music, and lyrics denouncing homophobia. In 2021, the project took shape as a band with the addition of three internationally experienced musicians: bassist Juan Sebastián Monsalve, singer Lina Silva, and saxophonist/synthesizer player Jorge Buitrago.
They have performed at festivals such as Punk Island Fest, Lorville Fest, Protest Fest, Queerly Fest, Veranito Summer Fest, and U Street Music Fest, among others, as well as in punk clubs and queer movement spaces across the city, cultivating a diverse and transnational following. Their sound is defined by genre hybridity, creating a singular aesthetic universe where sonic aggression coexists with moments of vocal intimacy and theatrical expressiveness. The band draws from 70s and 80s influences—punk, new wave, and disco-funk—layered with electronic textures reminiscent of techno and industrial music, bel canto melodies, and Afro-Caribbean rhythms. Intense, joyous, and danceable, their music asks no permission: Latin-tinged punk, abrasive electronics, spoken-word poetry sharp as knives, and a voice that shifts from lyrical singing to raw screams without warning.
