Session 002:Andalusian Music of Fez ft. AbdelHaq Benjelloun
Recorded in Fez, Morocco
Andalusian music, known as al-Ṭarab al-Andalusī in Arabic, traces its origins to medieval Al-Andalus (Islamic Spain), where it flourished as a sophisticated blend of Arab, Berber, and Iberian influences. Rooted in the rich musical traditions of Cordoba, Seville, and Granada, this genre was preserved and carried across North Africa by Andalusian refugees following the Christian Reconquista. Over centuries, Fez, Morocco, became a vital center for this tradition, where master musicians safeguarded and evolved its poetic, melodic, and rhythmic structures. Characterized by intricate maqamat (melodic modes), poetic lyrics, and orchestral instrumentation, Andalusian music continues to thrive today, passed down through oral tradition and formal conservatories, serving as a living bridge to the Golden Age of Islamic Spain.dances and rhythmic music, is intended 'to wake the faithful', both literally and figuratively.
