join us for an evening celebrating the soulful magic that emerges when bits of culture mix into something that is greater than the sum of its parts!
we will listen to some live eclecticana music, eat two versions of gumbo (one vegetarian), and enjoy some libations from the birthplace of gumbo.
a gumbo-of-a-man himself,
mike cobb has been playing an eclectic mix of americana for over 30 years (in fact, it's so boundary-defying, he came up with his own term: eclecticana). mike incorporates country, blues, folk, rock, psychedelic, garage, punk, and even some tejano into his style. you will
also find him playing around the new york area and internationally with other bands like the crevulators (going strong since 2003!), in articles he writes for international music publications, on two of his own podcasts, and on on several upcoming recording projects!
on the 7th, mike is presenting a fun, new group called "spike & the dredgers," which is just the latest manifestation of long time musical friendships from in and around brooklyn. it features matt statler on acoustic guitar, vocals and percussion; rip westmoreland on guitar, vocals and mandolin; ben herzog on upright bass and vocals; and scott hamilton on drums and vocals. just before the pandemic, they began playing together as the bootheel boss gobblers, another collaboration with this crew. they are all excited to get us grooving!
the evening has been built around his tune "dans les roux," which is a play on words (dans les rues) and an homage to a food, a place and a way of living that exemplifies this wondrous blending of culture that creates something awesome without obscuring the elements.
to literally taste this roux he sings about, cultures capsules will be providing two types of gumbo (one vegetarian) and dessert. abitas, sazerac, and some good stories will all help to take us deeper into the food and music.
