Walter Thompson / Steve Rust / Harvey Sorgen Trio
With a relationship that goes back over four decades, these three masters of contemporary
improvisation, Thompson, Rust and Sorgen, have been exploring new sonic terrain together since the early 1970’s. Their compositions are improvisation-based and in large part created in real time. Walter Thompson (pianist and founder of “Soundpainting"), Steve Rust (bass), and Harvey Sorgen (drums) have collaborated with many of the major forces in contemporary music including Anthony Braxton, François Jeanneau, Marilyn Crispell, Thomas Chapin, Tomas Ulrich, Steve Swell, Sarah Weaver, Angélique Cormier, Leroy Jenkins, Frank London, Paul Simon, Natalie Merchant, Dave Douglas, Garth Hudson, Julius Hemphill, Zakir Hussain, Wadada Leo Smith, Roswell Rudd, Bruce Hornsby, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Karl Berger, and Dewey Redman among many others.
This Barbes date marks their first New York City appearance in many years, and will likely feature special guests. They have independently released two albums, most recently the energetic and eclectic
