Romanian-born
Sanda Weigl has been performing at Barbès for close to 2 decades, with a variety of projects - from the roma songs of her childhood, to the Brecht catalog, Tom Waits songbook, German medieval minnesinger repertoire and more.
Sanda first achieved fame as a teen-age member of one of East Germany’s most popular rock band. After publicly denouncing Russia’s invasion of Czechoslovakia, she was sentenced to two years forced labor in an East Berlin factory and then, expelled to the West where she worked in theater in Europe with the likes or Robert Wilson. She then moved to New York where, as she puts it, she found her roots.
Ten years ago, Barbès released her album
Gypsy in a Tree, a tribute and a reinterpretation of the Roma songs of her childhood, with contributions by 3 NY veterans of the NY jazz and experimental scene.
