You won’t want to miss this–a free outdoor celebration of the sacred steel guitar featuring the legendary Calvin Cooke, festival favorite Kashiah Hunter, and future star Terrell King

Location: Right OUTSIDE the Jalopy Theatre, 315 Columbia St., Brooklyn, NY, 11231, AS A PART OF OPEN STREETS NYC

We are so excited to be putting on a live show after two years of virtual events, and we couldn’t think of a more fitting or joyful way than this to return to the Jalopy Theatre. For those who aren’t familiar with it, sacred steel is a genre that developed in Black churches in the Southeastern United States. Sacred steel players have a unique ability to make their instruments “sing,” and their entire performance is geared towards raising a spirit of joy and community in the audience. It’s the perfect energy for a Brooklyn summer block party, and it’s free!

To learn more about the genre, click here for the Steel Guitar Unconvention’s official sacred steel playlist.

Thank you to the Brooklyn Arts Council for their generous support, for the fourth year in a row!

Made possible in part by the Department of Transportation, Open Streets NYC, The New York State Council on the Arts, & the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.

Produced by Raphael McGregor and Kashiah Hunter
