We are thrilled to announce our first 3-week oud course with Gabe Lavin. Gabe is a fantastic musician and teacher, and will help musicians of all levels at strengthening their fundamentals on the oud.
Class Schedule is three Sundays in a row, 10/6, 10/13, and 10/20.
All classes will meet at 3pm at Brooklyn Music School (126 St Felix St, Brooklyn, NY 11217).
Open to all levels, this three week course will give you the tools to strengthen and improve three fundamental aspects of your oud playing: fingerboard positions and intonation, risha (plectrum) control and dexterity, and ornamentation and embellishment. The course will cover various exercises and training techniques that you can take with you to improve these aspects of your playing. It will also cover how to apply them to playing and performance, providing an opportunity to work on songs and instrumental pieces of Arabic music and other maqam traditions of the Middle East in a fun and engaging group setting.
Students expected to bring their own oud to class.
Gabriel Lavin, Ph.D., is a Brooklyn-based guitarist, oudist, and scholar. He has studied and performed throughout the United States, Egypt, and the Gulf region, and in August 2024 obtained a degree in oud performance and teaching from the Bait Al Oud Conservatory in Abu Dhabi under the guidance of Sherine Tohamy. His playing and teaching incorporates a broad spectrum of regional styles and techniques from the Arab world and beyond.
