On December 14th, please join us for a very special night of music for dancing, featuring the Mountain Lions (NYC) & Morgan O'Kane (Kingston, NY).
MOUNTAIN LIONS play ecstatic dance music from the southern Balkans and Turkey, in an all-star lineup inspired by zurna and davul but purring and growling with 3 alto saxophones and drum exclusively. Saxophonists Peter Hess, Catherine Foster, and Daro Behroozi bring deep knowledge of Eastern traditions and virtuosic sax technique, and Balkan percussion veteran Matt Moran drives the rhythm with a double-headed drum (davul) he made specifically for this group. Mountain Lions draws from primarily Roma musical styles, and brings their own creativity and expression to create an ecstatic dance experience.
-“Achingly intense... the result was as psychedelic as anything played on any stage in New York this year – and a pretty spectacular display of circular breathing and extended technique” (New York Music Daily).
MORGAN O'KANE plays the banjo as if his life depended on it, (as it has on many occasion) with an intensity that evokes a redeeming kind of sadness that will resonate with anyone ready to give it the space. Rooted in traditions of Americana, folk and bluegrass, his songs about heartbreak, hard traveling, and the love of friends, and the on-going war humans wage against themselves and the earth strike a chord with any listener. Originally from Virginia, Morgan fell in love with playing music while living in NYC as a means to channel and express long years of travel and loss, fine tuning his unique style on the streets and subways. O'Kane will be performing with his trio, Ezekial Healy on guiter and JR Hankins on flugelhorn.
