For a double whammy of Pennebaker, check out Monterey Pop, one of cinema’s seminal concert films and a distilled look at 60s counterculture by way of the music that mobilized it. Before Woodstock, there was the Monterey International Pop Festival, where an assortment of music giants, everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Janis Joplin to Simon and Garfunkel, would perform now-legendary live sets. Pennebaker’s spontaneous, lightning-in-a-bottle live-wire kickstarted the next decade’s rebellious spirit with a bang.
