MIRAMAR plays mostly boleros, sung in duo form by
Rei Alvarez and
Laura Ann Singh and arranged by pianist
Marlysse Argandoña. In the Latin world, boleros are the ultimate expression of love and suffering and hold cross-generational and cross-national appeal. With a majority of Miramar’s members having roots in Puerto Rico, it was only natural that the group paid particular attention to Puerto Rican boleros. Their debut album (on
Barbès Records) was a tribute to
Sylvia Rexach, a maverick composer and writer who was an emblematic figure of San Juan’s bohemian scene of the 40’s and 50’s. Their latest single, an arrangement for string quartet of Sylvia Rexach's classic,
OLAS Y ARENAS, was released by
Barbès Records.
