Leo Lovechild is a songwriter, poet, multi-instrumentalist, and bandleader from New York City, who is highly concerned with bridging gaps and blurring lines. Born in Manhattan to artistic parents, Lovechild was raised with music in his blood—his great-great uncle was the legendary songwriter Irving Berlin and his grandfather and first teacher, Eugene Becker, was Associate Principal Violist of the NY Philharmonic under Leonard Bernstein. Influenced by his father’s instinctual need to create works of art and his mother’s belief in literature as the ultimate tool for communicating profundity, Lovechild began writing songs in elementary school, and started performing in and around New York City when he was just 14. In high school, he had the honor of opening for iconic folk-singer and civil rights leader Pete Seeger at a benefit concert in Dobbs Ferry, NY. During a brief stint at Oberlin College, he founded The Tour on Poverty, taking his music coast-to-coast to raise money for food equity programs and housing organizations in each town he played.
After two tours, Leo returned home and met the Woodstock, NY bred twins, Aaron and Wyatt Mones, and the three formed a musical bond, cutting their teeth in venues up and down the East Coast. Over the next few years, they recorded what would become Lovechild’s debut album, All You Need is Lovechild, released in early 2022, and followed with four singles and the culminating EP, From a Bedroom on the Pavement, in the same year.
“Bad Behavior” (lead single off his upcoming full-length album, released in August of 2023), is a scathing but brutally honest look at the New York art scene and Lovechild’s place within it after nearly 30 years calling the Big Apple his home. The release showcases his lyrical brilliance and furthers the scope of Lovechild and his band’s classic but innovative approach to songsmanship. He followed “Bad Behavior” with “Coming Back Around” (September of ‘23) and “The Long Game” (November ‘23). The two releases not only extend Lovechild’s prowess as a songwriter, but also showcase his production skills, as the songs are lush with banjo, glockenspiel, pedal steel guitar, melotrons, and synthesizers to complement the traditional rock and roll elements present in most of his catalogue. His second full-length record,
Sad Songs to Make You Happy, is set to release in early 2024."
