== BIO ==
LEAH SONG
Gathering tools and teachings of resilience, mythology, creative ritual, and rewilding ...
Leah Song is a storyteller, song-catcher, musician, poet, and activist known for her role as front woman of Rising Appalachia with her sister Chloe Smith. She incorporates sultry vocals, rhythm, banjo, guitar, ballads, dance, spoken-word and storytelling into her work. Her music is based in the traditions of Southern soul and international roots music.
Song engages in social activism and is involved with the environment, food justice, human rights and prison advocacy. She has studied and worked alongside some of the greatest teachers of our time... including Clarissa Pinkola Estés, Martin Shaw, Joanna Macy, Charles Eisenstein, Winona LaDuke, Sobunfu Some, and Rosemary Gladstar...
CASTANEA
Under the alias CASTANEA, Rising Appalachia’s David Brown produces and mixes sultry melodies, deep bass and rhythmic pulse.
Two decades of touring in over thirty countries has brought in a world of influence, and the opportunities to collaborate with artists from Burkina Faso to Berlin to Buenos Aires shines through his dj sets. As with Rising sisters Leah and Chloe, whose southern upbringing instilled love of roots music and hip-hop, Brown’s own musical path hasn’t follow a straight line. Along with the instruments for which he’s best known – the upright bass, banjo and guitar – Brown’s skills cross over to turntables and beat making, through which a lush sound emerges that is reminiscent of early trip hop classics but rooted in acoustic instruments. The name, CASTANEA, like the music, has layers of depth and beauty: it’s shared with a mighty tree in Appalachia that is being coaxed back from the brink of disappearance.
== ABOUT HAWK & HAWTHORNE ==
The Hawk & Hawthorne is a practicing permaculture community & venue nestled just north of Asheville, NC. Check out the short video below for a glimpse into the magick.
Set in a freshly renovated heritage tobacco barn amidst an expansive valley full of fruit trees, gardens, spring fed ponds & majestic views. The Hawk has been an organic gathering point for the Asheville & Barnardsville community for over 30 years, hosting hundreds of weddings, workshops & intimate live performances.
The community here is emerging in response to the challenges of our times -- drawing strength from folk traditions and each other to create containers for the emergent human renaissance to celebrate & grow. Through cooperation, music, crafting & regenerative agriculture practices, we are rediscovering our sense of belonging; to the land & each other.
--> We are a non-alcoholic venue. Buchi Kombucha, Kefir Soda & Homemade Elixirs from our garden will be available at the bar. (Cash preferred; venmo/cards OK.)
--> Parking & Driving directions sent with ticket confirmation.
--> Please leave dogs at home.
== A NOTE ON PRICING & ACCESSIBILITY ==
As an intimate, non-alcoholic and independent venue, we have to charge more for tickets than most other venues.
Producing these shows is labor of love and financially risky. We must continually balance our values around financial accessibility with paying artists what they ask, taking care of our resident crew, and putting aside funds to maintain & improve the land.
==> Low on cash?
If you’d like to join us but are low on cash, please email us at
[email protected] & let us know what you can offer. We have a limited number of discounted spots available for those who need them including BIPOC & economically disadvantaged groups.
==> No Work-trade
We staff our shows in house & do not generally work/trade or exchange for our events. While we appreciate the energy & culture around volunteering at festivals and shows in exchange for tickets, working shows is a primary part of how our residents get paid. If you have a specific, professional / technical offering (e.g. running lights) we may be open to it.
==> Can you support?
Conversely, if you are in abundance & can afford to donate a little extra — there is an option to do this on the ticket page. Tips will be shared with our crew here. Thanks for supporting us!
=== CAMPING AT THE HAWK ===
