Jazztopad festival presents:
Michael Bates+ Lutosławski Quartet :Metamorphoses: Variations on Lutosławski.
Jazztopad NY and Double vinyl Release Show!
Now available on double vinyl! “Metamorphosis” is a radically different interpretation of the revered Polish icon: Witold Lutosławski, composer/bassist Michael Bates combines Acrobat, a ferocious quintet of improvisers, with one of Poland’s most innovative contemporary ensembles, the Lutosławski String Quartet.
With literal themes or pieces composed in his spirit, Michael Bates has created a powerful set of music that reveals a pairing classical music and jazz. Masterful re-orchestrations fueled by grooves found in both modern jazz and chamber ensembles. Bates points out: “One often hears talk about them being different worlds. Maybe. But this language is shared by both contemporary composers and improvisers alike. It can be utilized in many ways.” While Lutosławski is clearly being channeled, these nine fantastic voices will be on full display: beautiful, vicious, elegant and dissonant.
