Foster/Crawford/Sullivan Trio was formed in 2023, with a deceptive focus on quick, dynamic gestures that gradually construct long-form structures of improvisation. Inspired equally by free improvisation, jazz, noise, and myriad folk traditions, the trio moves with an impish sense of play, avoiding cathartic gestures in favor of
tactical ones.
Michael Foster is a New York City-based saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist, and curator whose work focuses on
improvisation as a metaphor for queer inter-relationality. As a saxophonist he utilizes extensive instrumental preparations (such as balloons, drum heads, amplification, vibrators, etc) in conjunction with a broad tone indebted to both noise and the jazz tradition. He often collaborates with Nate Wooley, Leila Bordreuil, Ben Bennett, Lydia Lunch, Weasel Walter, Brandon Lopez, Luke Stewart, Chris Corsano, William Parker, Sarah Hennies, Marina Rosenfeld, Psychic TV, and many more. His current projects include The Ghost, The New York Review of Cocksucking, and Michael Foster with Strings.
Webb Crawford is a guitarist and instrument-builder working within free improvisation. They approach the guitar with Piedmont-style fingerpicking, and a propensity for the percussive. They have built string instruments ranging from electric guitar, basses, mandolins, to modern reconstructions of historical instruments and instruments made from repurposed materials or found objects. They often work with Zosha Warpeha, Michael Foster, Stella Silbert, Nat Baldwin, Brandon Lopez, and others. Their solo album, “Joiners,” was released to acclaim on TripTicks Tapes in 2022.
Joey Sullivan is a drummer, percussionist, and organizer based in Philadelphia. He is a member of Bark Culture, The Ghost, and Florry, and often collaborates with Michael Foster, Victor Vieira-Branco, John Blum, Brandon Lopez, and others. As a drummer he focuses on fusing found objects with an approach rooted in jazz with an ear for timbre and reactivity.
