Diamonds of the Night

Jan Němec’s debut feature film is pure cinematic poetry, using a visual and sonic dreamscape to convey the harrowing journey of two boys who escape transport to a concentration camp and become lost in a forest. The camera flies in its opening tracking shot, the longest in Czechoslovakian cinema history. That alone is worth the price of admission, but the remaining innovative filmmaking makes the entire experience unmissable.
