Step into Unicorn Bar on Sunday, June 8th, for an evening of dark cabaret-folk, featuring Charming Disaster (NYC) and Dust Bowl Faeries (Catskill) with delightfully macabre music inspired by myth, magic, and mortality.
Charming Disaster is a goth-folk musical duo based in Brooklyn, NY, formed in 2012 by Ellia Bisker and Jeff Morris. Inspired by the macabre humor of Edward Gorey, Tim Burton and Charles Addams, the murder ballads of the Americana tradition, and the dramatic flair of the cabaret, they write playfully dark songs that tell stories about death, crime, myth, magic, science, and the occult. Charming Disaster’s music has been featured on the podcast Welcome to Night Vale, they have toured the United States and Europe, and have opened for Rasputina, Voltaire, and The Dresden Dolls. Recent appearances include Dragon Con, the Rochester Fringe Festival, and the Coney Island Sideshow stage. Their new album, THE DOUBLE, comes out on May 16.
"Charming Disaster has an affinity for monsters, mortality, paranormal activity and unearthly shenanigans…sparked by flashes of wry humor." –Rock & Roll Globe
“Charming Disaster are unusual, spooky, wickedly talented, and completely unafraid to delve deep into the underworld in exploration of all things lurking in the dark...they have a knack for making the macabre fun.” –Mixed Alternative
Dust Bowl Faeries perform a faerie-tale fusion of dark cabaret and gothic polka music, infused with a dose of witchcraft and a dusting of woodland magic. The accordion-driven freak-folk ensemble hails from the New York Hudson Valley and draws inspiration from sinister circus songs, murder ballads and Eastern European folk music. Singing saw, piano accordion, guitar, strings and percussion combine to create the Dust Bowl Faeries otherworldly sound.
The ensemble has toured internationally and has released several recordings including Magic & Mayhem (2024) featuring Melora Creager of Rasputina on cello, Carnival Dust (2023) featuring harpist Mikaela Davis and a debut album featuring Tommy Stinson of The Replacements. The band was founded by Ryder Cooley and taxidermy spirit animal Hazel the Ram. Ryder and Hazel will be joined by Jon B. Woodin & Melora Creager for this special trio performance.
