Brooklyn Maqam is an organization dedicated to presenting Middle Eastern (in particular, Arabic) music, with the goals of expanding its audience, preserving it as an art form, and building community centered around the music.

This month:
The Cassette Addict - by Karim Nagi and his Enablers

Like a cassette, Karim Nagi rewinds, fast forwards, and flips the music. His traditional Arab repertoire and bicultural originals bleed together like two sides of a tape spool. From Egypt via Chicago, Karim coils buzuq, percussion, analog and oratory into a storyline. He partners with his audience to reach a joyfully communal state. He is a TEDx speaker, producer of 17 albums, composer, playwright, teacher and cassette addict. He will be joined by John Murchison on qanun, Gideon Forbes on nay, and other surprise enablers.
