Brooklyn Maqam presents:
Nano Raies is a singer-songwriter and actress originally from Homs, Syria. She fled the war in Syria and came to the US to pursue her passion in music, becoming the first Syrian woman to attend and graduate from Berklee College of Music.  Nano sings in multiple languages - Arabic, English, French and Portuguese - and her music style is a fusion of pop, Middle Eastern Arabic, western classical and Latin music.
She has reworked and translated a number of pop standards into Arabic, such as “The Prayer” by David Foster, to mark the tenth year anniversary of the Syrian war; "Bella Ciao" which became one of the anthem for the recent Iraqi revolution and  “Drive My Car” in honor of Saudi women gaining the right to drive.

Brooklyn Maqam is an organization dedicated to presenting Middle Eastern (in particular, Arabic) music, with the goals of expanding its audience, preserving it as an art form, and building community centered around the music.
Each second Wednesday of the month, they feature different musicians.
