The Medieval folk band Alkemie returns to Jalopy for a tale perfect for a spring evening. Almost seven hundred years ago, a London scribe recorded a Celtic-inspired version of the ancient Orpheus myth, wherein the hero visits the realm of the Fairies rather than the spirits of the underworld. Come be transported by Ben Matus’s arrangement of this Middle English legend, which uses ancient fiddles, harps, recorders and (modern!) voices to touch on themes of “otherness” and reconciliation. Feel free to come dressed in the spirit of your favorite mythical creature!
About the Band
As travelers to the intersections of the medieval court, cloister, and folk world, ALKEMIE is unabashed about dismantling the barriers that have traditionally separated these domains and our present experience. Comprised of singer-performers playing two dozen instruments–including vielles (early fiddles), harps, psaltery, scheitholt (early zither), recorders, douçaines & dulcians (early double reeds), bagpipes, and percussion—they are known for their “characterful playing” (The New Yorker) and “fresh arrangements that incorporate touches of bluegrass and Celtic music” (The Whole Note). Alkemie recently created the soundtrack to the Peabody and BAFTA award-winning video game Pentiment, which Gamereactor said “truly elevated the experience to a height normally reserved for angels and aircrafts.”
This performance is part of Alkemie’s Floralia festival, which concludes on Sunday, May 4 with a free, family-friendly May Day celebration in Prospect Park which will include a guided May Day dance, a demonstration of medieval instruments, optional participation in short scenes from a medieval play, a May Day trivia scavenger hunt, and face painting.
